Is Your Face Cream Really Worth All That Money?

by Ian Richards

Anti ageing skin care is something that concerns both men and women and they are always looking for the quick fix to make them look younger. When it comes to a non surgical facelift, people usually try anti ageing skin cream, which is why it is a multi million pound industry. What is not realised is that by the time they need to get younger looking skin, the damage will have been done and you are left with a damage limitation situation. If you start to protect your skin when you are young, it will age more slowly.

One big ageing factor are the UV B rays that affect the skin whether the sun is out or not. This means that even when the sky is overcast and covered in clouds, these little demons get through to work on your skin to make it older. So from a young age, you are being bombarded all the time you are outside. Very few women appreciate this fact because they are more concerned about protecting themselves from the UV-A rays that come from a clear blue sky.

So from the first time you get put out in the garden in your pram, the UV-B rays have started to age you. Then for the rest of your life they carry on ageing you every time you go outside, unless you are using an umbrella. To counter this you need to be using a sun blocker at all times on your hands, face and neck. It may even be worth substituting your moisturiser for a good sun blocker.

We are bombarded with TV advertisements for anti ageing skin cream, many featuring hi-tech laboratories with actors in white lab coats pretending to be scientists. This is trying to show you that this particular cream has been rigorously tested and is not only safe but their technical advantages will make your skin look younger, guaranteed.

Many of the active ingredients being touted as 'new' or 'breakthrough' are really chemicals that have been known and used for years for other different conditions, usually in pharmacological circumstances. Because they have this history of use without nasty side effects, cosmetic manufacturers explore some of the other possibilities to the chemicals. As long as they can determine some minor improvement in a few guinea pig people, it is rushed out as the latest thing to combat ageing skin.

A typical type of ingredient is one that goes by the name of Retinol which is actually vitamin A. This has been known and used by the medical profession in the treatment of skin problems. It is used in a quite high dosage, which means it is only available on prescription from a doctor. The amount of Retinol you will find in any preparations you can buy, are going to be relatively small and therefore the effects will match. This doesn't mean that you may not derive some benefit from using it but you may be better off spending your money in food that is rich in vitamin A.

Time is the enemy of any anti ageing skin preparation and it is difficult to know the age of the jar you are buying as, unlike food, there is no date printed on the packaging. As soon as these preparations are manufactures, they start to degrade. Air and moisture will attack them, making them less effective and this process becomes accelerated, once you have opened it, so always follow the instructions on how to store them.

As most of the anti ageing skin creams are quite expensive, especially when you look at the amount that is in the jar or tube, you may wish to consider making your own. It is not that difficult, you do not need to be a scientist but you do need to make sure everything you use is very clean. You start with the base, which can be an inexpensive moisturiser to which you add the active ingredients. Only make small batches at a time so that you always have the freshest and most active cream to work on the skin. You can find any number of different recipes for face creams and sourcing the materials shouldn't be a problem. It is then a question of experimenting until you find the right combination that is the best for your skin type. Then you will have a non surgical facelift cream to be proud of, knowing that it is your own creation. Who knows, you could end up with your own cosmetics empire.
