Japan helps Gia Lai province reduce poverty

The Japanese Government has pledged to provide 3.5 million USD for central highland Gia Lai province’s poverty reduction between 2009 and 2014.

A record of discussion for a project on capacity development of participatory agricultural and rural development for poverty reduction in the province was signed by Motonori Tsuno, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Phung Ngoc My, Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee in Hanoi on Jan. 7.

The project is expected to directly benefit 1,300 households in Kon Thup and Lo Pang communes of the province’s Mang Yang district where ethnic minority people are dominant with high poverty rate.

Apart from providing financial support to the inhabitants of the two communes, the project will try to improve their capacity to analyse difficulties, formulate community development plans and mobilise financial resources to fund the plan implementation, the skills helpful for them to make their self-reliant efforts in improving living conditions even after the projects ends in five years.

The project also aims at establishing a network of extension and enhancing their capacity to deliver extension services to farmers using more effective and participatory approach. (VNA)
