Kailua-Kona is a city on the west coast of the Big Island that is the main point for tourists to visit. Most visitors that go to the Big Island stay at the west side because of the climate. Here it doesn't rain very much and there's less wind than on the east side.

In and around Kona there are lots of beaches, where gentle waves are breaking softly onto the white, soft sand. The nature around Kona is amazingly beautiful and gives you opportunities to get into a peaceful state of mind.

You'll find Kona at the foot of the volcano Hualalai. It's a city that has a lot of modern tourist attraction as well as numerous historical sites. You will see a lot of hotels and lodging and also a lot of restaurants and bars, yet Kona still has been able to keep its charm and calmness.

The missionaries made later Kona into a seaport with a lot of houses and churches being built. Kailua Pier is found in the middle of the city and is the place to be at sunset. Here you can experience amazing sunsets and also have a good view of the area.

If you like to spend some of your time at a calm beach with white sand, you don't have to go further than to the side of the pier. Kamakahonu Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling and there are also some canoe rentals available here.

Along the seaside you find the main street Ali'i Drive. This is probably where you'll be spending most of your time in Kona, since most activities are located here. This is where most hotels, restaurants and shops can be found and also a good amount of the cultural and historical sites.

Kona is situated close to the Airport and is therefore easily accessible. It's popular to have it as your main location when you're at the Big Island and make daily trips to other areas of the island. In the area you can easily activate yourself by going on a boat cruise or by doing some hiking or horse-back riding.
