Electricity sector targets to generate over 83 billion kWh in 2009

The electricity sector has targeted to generate around 83.3 kWh in 2009, up 12.5% compared to 2008, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Of the figure, the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will produce 57.44 billion kWh while the remaining 25.8 billion kWh will be supplied by non-EVN power plants.

Specifically, the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group will supply around 10 billion kWh and the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, 2.4 billion kWh.

Electricity sales in 2009 are also expected to hit 74.9 billion kWh, up 13.6%.

In order to ensure sufficient supply of electricity for socio-economic development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked EVN to accelerate investment to ensure the construction progress of major thermo-electric plants of Cam Pha, Hai Phong, O Mon, Quang Ninh and hydro-electric power plants of Cua Dat, Song Con, Se San 4 and An Khe-Kanak as well as the electricity plant for the Dung Quat Oil Refinery so as to generate an additional of nearly 4,100 MW from these plants.
