Classic Races - The Breeders' Cup

By Simon M Skinner

The culmination and peak of excitement in the Breeder's Cup event, the Breeder's Cup Classic is a Grade I stakes Thoroughbred horse race.

This Grade I stakes race is for Thoroughbreds three years old and older. The race is a 1 miles and is considered to be the premier Thoroughbred race of the year. The purse is a whopping $5 million.

Due to the race's large purse, it regularly attracts US and International competitors. Due to this, specific weight rules and restrictions have been placed to ensure a fair field. Horses must be three years old and older to compete and weight rules have been placed for horses based on age. Four year olds and up are required to carry 126 pounds.

Horses have to be at least 126 lbs in weight if they are four years or older, three year olds must be at least 122 lbs if they were born before Jul 31 in the northern hemisphere and 117 lbs and up if born in the southern hemisphere on or after Aug 1. Why the difference? Horses born in the southern hemisphere are considered younger because of the difference in foaling seasons between the northern and southern hemisphere.

The winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic often goes on to win U.S. Horse of the Year Honors. This has been in the case in the last four winners of the race, which included Curlin in 2007, Invasor in 2006, Saint Liam in 2005 and Ghostzapper in 2004.

This is a race which is difficult to predict the winner of. There is such a high level of competition that it's hard to tell who ca win. There have been big upsets in the Breeeder's Cup Classic before - the biggest in the history of the race was in 1993, when the underdog Arcangues won. The payoff for a bet on this horse was $269.20 on a $2 bet!

Fans of Thoroughbred horse racing find that the Breeder's Cup Classic offers an unbeatable opportunity to watch the best trainers and jockeys at work, as well as the best horses in racing as they perform. It is not unusual to see a new trainer come out on top in the race, making an exciting event even more so.

D. Wayne Lukas, who has one many other races, has a mere one Breeeder's Cup Classic win under his belt - in 1999 with the horse Cat Thief. The best jockeys and trainers in thee sport can be seen in action. Big names like Jerry Bailey, Pat Day and others have multiple wins in this event.
